It’s been a very busy time for the Buoys since the last blog. The Team have been training tirelessly at David Lloyd Clubs developing their yoga skills at Iyengar Yoga Shala High Wycombe and rowing at home on their Concept 2 rowing machines. Already they are feeling fitter and more determined than ever to meet the Challenge before them.
After some terrible ‘Spring’ weather that saw the Team confined to the Ergos at the Marlow Rowing Club, the Buoys finally got onto the water and have been loving their ‘Learn to row’ sessions on the river.
This month has seen the purchase of the boat, a major milestone and something which many teams don’t manage to acquire until a few months before the Event. After a weekend spent cleaning the boat, it was then trailered down to Christchurch for new solar panels to be fitted, and the water maker sent for servicing. The boat will be at Rannoch in Burnham on Crouch throughout July and August so that the Team can take to the water every weekend and become properly acquainted with it.
Another exciting development this month is the huge honour of having secured the support of six-times World Champion and Gold Medal winning Paralympian Naomi Riches. What a fantastic lady she is! With lots of ideas for fundraising events and publicity for the Buoys’, she is a real asset to the Team’s Campaign. Naomi is patron of IN-vision, a charity which furthers research into infantile nystagmus, a little-known eye condition affecting young children for life. And so it was decided that IN-vision would be our second charity.
Naomi is a Member of Marlow Rowing Club, and introduced us to the Club’s Para/Adaptive Rowing coach, Bruce Lynn. Bruce had lots of great ideas for the Team and explained how the Club need to raise funds for an Adaptive Rowing boat, at a cost of around £4750. The Team immediately responded by saying ‘Let’s see if we can raise enough for two boats!’ So our third good cause was established.
The Buoys have just made their debut appearance in the Bucks Free Press, Media sponsors: Read the article here.
The next few months will be all about getting on the water, more training and most importantly fundraising.
There are two events scheduled for 2018;
David Lloyd Leisure in Glory Mill Lane, Wooburn Green, High Wycombe – 15th September – An event where the Buoys (again with their boat) will be hosting races and competitions on the Concept 2 rowers, followed by a Race Night in the evening.
Many more events will follow, so watch this space!
